Web Site Usability: Communicating Your Site’s Purpose

When someone arrives at your web site, make sure they know what your site is about. These usability considerations are a key part of how effectively your site communicates what your business does. Here are some of the main things that should be on your home page and carried out in design and content throughout the site:

–Your organization name and logo (at the top, often in the left corner)

–A tag line that explicitly summarizes what your site and your organization do. If the site has a purpose other than to specifically promote your company, it may be appropriate to put information about your organization on an “About” page and let the home page communicate the site’s purpose.

–Your value proposition, a statement summarizing the customer segment you are targeting and the core differentiators that distinguish you from your competitors. It’s a clear and specific statement about tangible benefits.
