Social Media: Ya Gotta Love The Social Side
I’ve been actively participating in Facebook and Linked in for the past couple of months, and am now beginning to use Twitter. A step at a time. And I’m coming to appreciate and enjoy the communities in each venue, beyond what I first thought of primarily as a business adventure. On Monday night I attended the EMMA Awards, during which the Central Virginia chapter of the American Marketing Association confers awards on those who have entered their marketing projects executed during the prior year. As I left the event, I stopped to chat with a couple of people I knew. A woman who works with their company told me how happy she was to meet me in person–I follow her in Twitter and we are Facebook friends. It was a lot of fun.
Last weekI had posted on Facebook that my husband and I would be staying at a certain hotel in Atlanta, and a new Facebook friend (who I have met in person) wrote on my wall that she had stayed at that hotel and she thought we’d have a great time there. I arrived there confident that everything would be fine.It was a great stay, and here’s a plug for the W hotels.
A couple of days ago I wrote on my wall that I had bought a ticked for the Charlottesville Business Innovation Awards gala next week and was looking forward to wearing the new party dress I bought for our trip to Atlanta. One of my nieces left a nice note cheering me on. I’m loving how Facebook provides the opportunity for easy, informal chitchat with most of the college kids in my family.
And today I sent a tweet directly to a friend whose email server has been kicking messages back without delivering them. She tweeted me back accepting the invitation I sent and giving me the email address I should use. I’m also learning to chit chat in Twitter, although I do struggle with the interruptions. I tend to get easily distracted, but I always have the option of closing TweetDeck and avoiding the little audible reminders (probably supposed to be a bird tweet) that can make me forget what I was in the middle of.
So, although I’ve come to social networking well after the first rush of pioneers, it’s good to be here. I recommend it!
