Social Media: Business Benefits Kicking in Quickly
Okay, this is a survey of one, so take this for what it’s worth. Although I’ve been on Facebook and Linked In for more than a year, I didn’t start tending and cultivating those networks until a couple of months ago. And I started this blog a couple of months ago. I also taught a workshop a month-and-a-half ago, have been attending workshops and presentations on uses of social media, joined Twitter (though I’ve been reading and lurking more than Tweeting) and doing a lot of reading of other blogs. In short, I’ve been networking a lot, in person and virtually.
And here’s what’s happening. I put up my web site, lindakolker.com, about three months ago. I’d been doing so much sub-contracting and had so much business coming in that I didn’t need a site for my business, and was too lazy to do for a long time. Until the recession hit and business slowed down. It was a great opportunity to explore new ways of building a business and new ways of doing business. I’ve been self-employed since 1981, and at the moment I’m having more fun with business development than I’ve ever had. There are a lot of reasons for that, and one of the biggest ones is that I get to learn how to use a new logy, which I absolutely love for it’s own sake, with connecting with people (need I say I’m an extrovert?).
I’ve discovered that posting to my blog regularly gets the blog crawled frequently, and Google seems to pick new posts up pretty much overnight. What’s been amazing is the some of the titles of my posts provide page one rankings. Amazing. I know enough about SEO although I’m not an expert like the folks who do it 24×7, but I made a decision to write without thinking much about content optimization. I’m not producing enough, nor controversial enough to register in the blogosphere, but that’s fine–it’s not my goal right now. I’m more interested in seeing what it’s like to publish a professional blog, and what can happen in response.
I’m participating actively in discussions in Linked-In groups, and posted a query in the User Experience group that has generated so much helpful information. The generosity of my professional peers is immensely gratifying. The give and take of networking is a wonderful thing.
And it has been immensely fun that someone has gotten in touch with me through Linked-In to explore working on projects together.
I can’t wait to see what happens next!
