Site Redesign Priorities

Came across a posting in Jakob Nielsen’s usability site, useit.com, the authorititave source on web site usability. Titled 10 High-Profit Redesign Priorities, the piece provides a nice framework for planning your site’s makeover. He comments that his ideas are not the “latest over-hyped stories the trade press loves to cover,” but instead, give users what they want: getting back to basics and investing in the simple things that really matter to them.

The piece was written in March, 2007, and now it’s more applicable than ever. You can go to the source to read the entire piece, but here’s the list:
1. Email newsletters
2. Informative Product Pages
3. High Quality Photography
4. Product Differentiation and Comparisons
5. Support for reordering
6. Simplified text
7. Catering to seniors
8. Gift-giving support
9. Search
10.User testing
Bonus tactic: Loyalty program

We’re all looking at how to use social media, SEO and other methods to drive people to our web sites. Neilsen’s guidelines are a cornerstone that helps make sure people get what they’re looking for when they arrive at your site.
