Make Your Blog Permalinks “Pretty”

Today I attended an workshop that was jam-packed with information on SEO, social networking and more. How to Cost-Effectively Drive Audiences to Your Website was presented by Todd Tweedy, CEO of Audience Machine, and David Robinson, Creative Director and co-founder of Birch Studio. I’ll be sharing what I learned in the next few posts.

One of the things I learned is to make sure the permalink for each blog post is “pretty.” That means the URL of the permalink is easy to read and understand, and, perhaps more importantly, means that Google picks up keywords in the URL. That should be part of your SEO strategy (and that’s a whole other topic).

So, this afternoon I reconfigured WordPress, the blogging platform I use because it’s magnificent, free, and sits on my website. I read the WordPress documentation on configuring for a pretty URL, and following links they provided, found a site that provides the snippet of code to be entered into the custom field in the Settings section.

I’m not a coder by trade, so I won’t go into details of how I ultimately made things work. It wasn’t too complicated, and now the link name is pretty. Here’s what I mean:

old link –lindakolker.com/WordPress/?p=30
new link –http://lindakolker.com/WordPress/five-link-building-tips-for-new-sites/03/2009/

There are ways to make it shorter, but that will be another entry.
