If You Build the Blog, You Have to Feed It
It’s been about two weeks since my last blog post. My intention was to relate continuing adventures in exploring social networking and how to use it for business development. I’ve followed a few leads in Twitter that will make interesting stories. And I’ve been using Facebook more freely and experiencing Facebook. It has been fun to re-connect with old friends in the personal realm, and I’m proceeding delicately in the professional realm. A step at a time. And I’ve updated my Linked-In profile. I need to ask clients for recommendations to post in Linked-In.
But I haven’t written in this blog. I keep thinking that I want to dive deeper, and then I’ll write another entry. In the meantime, I’m doing a lot of real-life, face to face networking to build my business. And rewriting web landing pages for a client who generates sales leads via Google Adwords. And co-creating a three-hour presentation for a workshop that I’m presenting for the Charlottesville Chamber of Commerce: Make Your Web Site Worth Visiting. Planning, revising, meeting to discuss, and then going through this process several times–it takes time. A lot of time. And blogging fell by the wayside.
Bottom line: Once you’ve started writing, you have to stay with it. Schedule the dates you plan to publish, and stick to it. If you want to build readership, credibility, and improve your ranking in Google, frequency–and of course relevance, quality, and having something interesting and informative to say–these things matter.
I’m trying to practice what I preach to clients. And getting to walk in their shoes. Social networking on the web is worth doing, but it’s a commitment. Like all commitments, it takes time to pursue. And time to realize the benefits.
