Google likes frequent updates–why blogs help your SEO rankings

I’m checking my email this morning, and I have a message from Google Alerts showing that the entry I posted last night has already been crawled and indexed. Two points here:

(1) Posting to your blog regularly provides you with more Google entries and, if the quality is good and you are busy cross-linking, raises your position on search engine results pages (called “SERPS”) in the SEO business. I haven’t begun cross-linking yet, because I want to build some content in my blog before I begin trying actively to attract readers. I want to find the rhythm, schedule and focus that works best, so I can be certain that I’ll be posting interesting and engaging ideas, lessons learned and advice.

(2) Using Google Alerts is a great way to track topics you’re interested in. Last year year I chaired the Communications Committee and sat on the Board of Directors of the Charlottesville Business Innovation Council (CBIC). I wanted to keep track of where the organization was mentioned, where press releases were getting published and who was linking. I also track other topics and keywords, including my own name. That’s how I learned that last night’s blog post was picked up.

If you aren’t tracking your organization, be sure to set up an alert so you know who is saying what about your business, and respond quickly if you need to. Many organizations keep close tabs on the blogosphere so they know what customers are saying and can either build on what’s positive or respond with corrective action to what’s negative.
